A healthy ocean starts with being free from rubbish and pollutants. When you commit to picking up one piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your daily walk you become part of the solution not part of the problem. All rubbish that is not picked up eventually finds its way to waterways and the ocean. By committing to picking up a piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your daily walk you engage in stopping rubbish from accumulating at the source. In addition you become aware of your environment and become invested in a brighter future. Take your first steps on a journey to become aware of your environment and what you can do to protect it for yourself and future generations.

At UN Biodiversity summit (COP15) it was proposed that 30% of land, inland waters and the ocean be substantially protected by 2030.  This treaty was ratified by many nations.  In March this year it became legally binding 120 days after the 60 th nation signed.

MPA or Marine Protected Areas are planned to cover 30% of the ocean’s international waters which make up 60% of the planet’s marine ecosystems.  In January this year The High Seas Treaty was signed which legally protects 30% of the international waters of the world’s oceans to ensure management, sustainability and biodiversity of international marine ecosystems.  The treaty aims to ensure equitable distribution of the world’s marine ...

This month at the Spruce Initiative we are examining some key aspects of the theme for World Oceans Day.  Once we reimagine the world as we hope it will become, we need to take the necessary steps towards achieving our goal.

it Is a multifaceted endeavour and we can each play a part in the solution.  We need to work together as individuals, and as local and global communities towards achieving the best outcome for everybody.

We support both human occupation and Nature working in harmony to create a sustainable future  for us all.

When we reimagine the world as a more beautiful place, we acknowledge the role humanity plays in the life of the planet.  We learn that as humans we have a right to be as active participants in making the world a more beautiful, liveable and inclusive place for all.

We need to step up to the plate, clean up the messes we’ve made, husband our resources and actively participate in creating a brighter future. We have been writing checks on the environment that the planet can’t cash.  We need to live in harmony with Nature and make the world a better place for our being present.

This month at the Spruce Initiative we comment on the theme for United Nations World Oceans Day 2026 “REIMAGINE: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean”.  As we understand it this involves learning to understand how we can both nurture and improve on Nature, applying our knowledge to both preserve the natural environment and live in harmony with it.  This is exciting in that it acknowledges that our oceans can with stewardship be both sustainable for humanity and Nature.
