This month at the Spruce Initiative we comment on the theme for United Nations World Oceans Day 2026 “REIMAGINE: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean”. As we understand it this involves learning to understand how we can both nurture and improve on Nature, applying our knowledge to both preserve the natural environment and live in harmony with it. This is exciting in that it acknowledges that our oceans can with stewardship be both sustainable for humanity and Nature.
Our oceans sustain us in many ways, supporting our lives with food, biodiversity and modifying the climate. This affects life on the planet. We need to learn stewardship of our oceans and an important part of this is legislating agreements to preserve the natural sustainability of our oceans. To do this we need to address the impact our lives have on our oceans and take action in a timely fashion to ensure sustainability.
