Remembering to Spruce

This month at the Spruce Initiative war look at the benefits that come from remembering to Spruce.

The word Spruce refers to both a type of tree and to making a person or their environment neat and tidy. In essence it involves making a person, thing or place more beautiful. In addition it refers to revitalising something such as a tree, an other thing, an environment or a person.

Sure we do our best to keep ourselves, our neighbourhoods and wildlife habitat spruced. This is an ongoing project. We need to be prepared to pick up a piece of rubbish when we are out on our daily walk and to plant a tree every year in celebration of Spruce Day.

We need to remember to Spruce ourselves as well. We seek to take care of our appearance and to choose sustainable food, clothes, homewares, furniture, homes and gardens. Part of this involves nurturing ourselves and our environment.

We need to beautify our community spaces in both the city and the rural areas. One of the simplest ways to do this is to plant trees and gardens and to engage in reforestation and marine parks initiatives.

This brings to mind the positive change that has been brought about by refraining from dumping chemical waste in our streams and other waterways. The result has been the proliferation of marine life and the restoration of our aquaculture in previously polluted areas.

Restoring native forests and wildlife habitats has the effects of sprucing up the environment, providing habitat for wildlife and helping to combat greenhouse gas emissions, fighting global warming.

In addition to reforestation we need to set aside marine parks to protect marine life and marine life habitat. We need to fish sustainably and ensure marine life is protected.

We suggest you make a start. Pick up one piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your daily walk and plant a tree every year in celebration of Spruce Day. Live lightly on the land. If you eat seafood, choose seafood that is sustainably sourced.

Have your say. Advocate for national and marine parks.

Clean and Green is our strategy. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce.

Cheers,
Felicity
