Security and The Spruce Initiative
This month at the Spruce Initiative we look at the role the Spruce Initiative plays in keeping our communities safe. Have you ever been in what is otherwise a beautiful environment and had it marred by the presence of rubbish? I’m sure you have almost all had that experience.
So the rubbish interferes with your enjoyment of the environment. The rubbish is something out of place, something wrong that leads you to feel insecure. So the rubbish is there and you feel insecure. What are you going to do about it?
Accumulated rubbish leads to depression and feelings of hopelessness and despair. We feel helpless to right the situation. When there is accumulated rubbish people have a tendency to throw more rubbish at it and the situation worsens.
Accumulated rubbish may require a cleaning bee to eliminate it. However if we are prepared to pick up a little bit each day when we are out on our daily walk the problem goes away all together. It is stopped at the source.
An environment whether a built environment or a natural one feels safe when there is no rubbish to mar it’s beauty. It feels cared for and that feeling of being cared for and being present in a pristine environment translates to a feeling of security. Our environment is cared for and in it we can feel safe.
When there is only a small amount of rubbish and we have not allowed it to accumulated we feel inclined to pick it up. The problem is manageable. We stop it at the source before it gets out of hand. We are encouraged to go the extra step and care for our environment and by extension each other.
Keeping our environment clean and tidy is part of being a good citizen. We protect each other and we protect wildlife which may be impacted by the presence of rubbish, marine animals especially who may mistake rubbish for food.
The presence of rubbish may lead to bad behaviour as it is obvious to people that the place isn’t being cared for. Like neighbourhood watch we can become custodians of our environment. We encourage you not to give in to despair. We challenge you to become part of the solution rather than part of the ptroblem. If you are picking up rubbish you are not going to drop it.
Join the Spruce Initiative and pick up one piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your daily walk. Beautify your environment and make it healthy and secure by the annual gift to the planet of a tree.
Clean and green is our strategy. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce.
Cheers, Felicity
