Celebrating Earth Hour: Happy Hour for the Earth

This month at the Spruce Initiative we celebrate Earth Hour on Saturday March 28 between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm by turning off all non essential lights and electronics and spending the hour doing something to celebrate our lives on Earth.

Earth Hour celebrates Nature in particular care of wildlife habitat and raises awareness about the environment. Of course it is hoped, like practising with the Spruce Initiative that this will be the start of your environmental awareness journey and is a call to action to protect our natural environment in particular addressing climate change, supporting biodiversity and ending pollution. These three issues were raised by Dr. Suzuki in his Science Matters newsletter March 6 th 2026. He goes onto say we have the power to change the way we think about the environment.

At the Spruce Initiative we trust in the power of one. One kind act can save a life or change a life forever. One hour spent doing something to celebrate Nature can lead to positive change that lasts a life time and creates a sustainable future. One does make a difference. If enough people are prepared to give an hour to the Earth in celebration of Earth Hour, practise picking up one piece of rubbish when out on their daily walk and planting one tree a year with the Spruce Initiative, these individual actions by many individuals can and will lead to permanent and sustainable change for both the individuals concerned and the environment.

What will you do during Earth Hour? I liked the suggestion of a candlelit dinner (with friends). Another idea is to make something by hand using sustainably sourced materials. I knit cotton cloths for use around the home, and give them as presents. You could spend the hour researching ways to live sustainably.

I recently read an article in the Australian Women’s Weekly March 2026 by Samantha Trenoweth which addressed the power of the moon on Nature and Rudolf Steiner’s method of farming according to the phases of the moon. It is called is called Biodynamics. Perhaps you could spend an hour reading up on Biodynamics and sustainable farming or gardening practises?

Earth Hour, like the Spruce Initiative, is a call to action. It is an opportunity to celebrate our lives on the planet and the power of the Earth to heal. When people consistently repeat small positive actions, those actions add up to sustainable positive change.

Environmental awareness is achieved by observation, education and practise. Like Happy Hour, when you are ready we challenge you to incorporate the principles of Earth Hour into your daily life. Why not celebrate Earth Hour once a month, once a week or even once a day? Be prepared to change the way you think and change the way you live one small step, one day at a time.

At the Spruce Initiative we are committed to advocating for the environment and making it Earth Day every day. We support our health and the health of our environment through a seeded daily walking meditation practise (picking up one piece of rubbish when you are out on your daily walk and disposing of it appropriately) and by planting a tree every year in celebration of International Spruce Day. International Spruce Day is a celebration of the Earth and our lives on the planet. It falls at the end of the traditional end of year holiday period and is in anticipation of the year ahead. Join us. We look forward to a sustainable future for our lives on the .planet

As a sneak peak, next month we will discuss the scientific principle of Activation Energy and how it applies to the Spruce Initiative.

Cheers,
Felicity
