Sprucing with a Buddy: the Power of Two

So you have started practising with the Spruce Initiative. Your neighbourhood is getting cleaner and you are reaping the benefits of daily exercise. You have planted a tree or two for Spruce Day and you are giving the planet the gift of clean air and wildlife habitat. What now?

How about spending the word. Why not take a buddy for a walk and spread the word about the Spruce Initiative? Get your daily exercise, enjoy the fresh air and the company of your friend. Do your bit to advocate for the environment.

Your neighbourhood gets doubly clean. Rubbish is stopped at the source and doesn’t end up in the ocean or other waterways. Your neighbourhood is more beautiful and secure. If you are picking up rubbish you’re not dropping it now are you?! It is a self righting strategy that leads to sustainable health and cleanliness of your environment.

So you plant a tree or two every year in celebration of Spruce Day. Did you know that a group of five trees forms a grove? Why not get four buddies to plant a tree with the Spruce Initiative or even plant a grove yourself? Whatever you can afford. Maybe even a forest!

Make a start. Don’t despair. Just plant one yourself and spread the word.

Spreading the word has the additional benefit of creating a strong social network which as well as being good for the planet, it is good for society. The power of like minded individuals called to action creates exponential benefits.

When we reach the threshold our environment is not just clean and green, it is better than before. We are spending time with friends. We are both getting exercise which is good for our physical and emotional health. We are setting a good example for others to follow. We are keeping our environment clean and Spruced.

When I saw one of my professors pick up a coffee cup the students had left in the classroom it made a lasting impression and eventually lead to this movement. Set a good example. You never know who might be watching and whose lives may be changed for the good forever.

Years later when I was living in Vancouver BC I was doing my daily walk in the city, picking up a piece of rubbish, and a young man got out of a car and said he had never seen anyone pick up rubbish before. I just smiled. I knew he was going to do likewise himself.

When walking with a buddy pick up a piece of rubbish and explain to your buddy about picking up one piece of rubbish a day when you are out on your daily walk. Doing this you learn to be aware of your environment and do something to be of service to your community.

Why not see if you can tell two buddies about practising with the Spruce Initiative? Then the power of one becomes the power of two and it leads to exponential growth. You are doing something good for your heath at the same time as being a good citizen.

On our Spruce website we advocate a daily walk practise, an annual gift to the environment, we publish a monthly newsletter about how the power of one leads to positive change, and we have started a weekly blog advocating for environmental issues. Stand up and be counted. Have your say or just spread the word.

Clean and green is our strategy. One piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t be afraid to take action. One piece really helps. That is 365 pieces in a year! It’s huge! Don’t just clean. Do something good for our planet. Why not plant a tree in celebration of Spruce Day. Join us! Let’s Spruce!

Cheers,
Felicity
