Making a Start
(The Big Picture and the Power of One)

The Spruce Initiative seeks to encompass a model in the present of cyclic, linear and future time. We plot a trajectory by evaluating what worked in the past, what needed to be changed and how to go about it. We seek to discover what we can do in the present to enable positive change now and in the future.

The Spruce Initiative is a self righting strategy. By following the Spruce Initiative we learn to initiate in the present what goes beyond what is at first sustainable and then leads to positive growth. We seek to envision a world of ever encompassing beauty.

When we talk about fresh starts we are reminded of that Eastern proverb. “Every journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.” We suggest you take that single step towards good health for both yourself and the planet.

If we look at the big picture we see that every one who becomes part of the solution has a hand in creating the kind of world we would all enjoy. No one wants to live in trash. If every body was prepared to pick up one piece of rubbish when out on their daily walk the place would stay clean all the time.

We all need Nature. We need the life giving trees and plants on land and plants, algae and bacteria in the ocean. We need clean waterways. Giving to Nature by the annual planting of a tree helps in numerous ways.

Now that we are reducing our use of plastics, many substitutes are made from wood and bamboo. This increases the need for trees. Trees are essential to our health and the health of the biosphere. They provide shelter for wildlife, shade for plants and people, fruit and nuts for food and of course cleaning the air and producing life giving oxygen.

The gift of a tree annually for which ever use you choose is a gift to the planetary ecosystem. If you are able please replace more than you use. We can plant trees at home, in our neighbourhood, in farmland or wilderness and for our neighbour communities and nations. We can engage in reforestation and protection of native forests.

Trees and plants which are close at hand to where they are used reduces the costs associated with shipping wood for material and food to that community. They provide shade and make the air more breathable. Your annual gift of a tree to the planet can provide food and materials for shelter where needed. It can provide restoration of essential wildlife refuges. There are too many benefits to list them all here.

You may choose to give to an organisation such as Greenfleet which restores wildlife habitat and ensures the forests are legally protected for 100 years. Trees form an important function in the health of both our neighbourhoods and the planet.

The key is a combination of climate control and waste management. The more we can do as individuals and communities to live lightly on the land and learn to help our neighbours at home and abroad the closer we will come to inhabiting a sustainable and beautiful planet.

It all begins with an education. We learn to be aware of our environment whether it be built or natural and to take steps to keep our environment clean and green.

Make a start on your journey with us. Please make a resolution to pick up one piece of rubbish when you are out on your daily walk, dispose of it appropriately and be prepared to give Nature a hand by the planting of new a tree each year.

Clean and green is our strategy. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean. Let’s Spruce.

Cheers,
Felicity
