Reflections on 2025 and International Spruce Day
As we approach the end of year holiday season we take a moment to reflect on the year gone by. This year we have looked at how the objectives of The Spruce Initiative impact the lives of both individuals and communities. During the year we also celebrated a number of environmentally friendly holidays.
We discussed the importance of initiatives that celebrate our future as well as our past and ask you to remember to gift the environment in your end of year gift giving. A gift to the Earth to say thank you for the natural environment which supports our lives and wildlife on the planet is a sustainable way of ushering in the New Year. Giving a tree on International Spruce Day, January 5 each year, which marks the end of the holiday season is a way of renewing and beautifying both the life of the Earth and our lives on the planet.
When architects and landscape architects design buildings and gardens they take into consideration the Vitruvian values of Firmness, Commodity and Delight. Applying these values they seek to beautify the built and natural environments.
Our motto is Clean and Green. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce. By Sprucing we plan to fortify our environment and make it more commodious and beautiful than before. By planting trees especially in legally protected forests we protect animals’ wildlife habitat and support the forests which clean the air and make oxygen for us to breathe.
Popular culture suggests that we take only photos and leave only footprints for our time on the planet. We suggest another goal of leaving the planet a little better than we found it. Through a daily practise of being prepared to pick up one piece of rubbish a day when we are out on our daily walks we make a commitment to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.
By being prepared to pick up a piece of rubbish every day when we are out on our daily walk we ensure that the environment stays clean all the time. By planting a tree every year on International Spruce Day we ensure that our environment is not only clean but better than before.
This planting of a tree every year is a symbolic gesture. Being prepared to pick up a piece of rubbish when we are out on a daily walk is beneficial both to our health and the health of our environment. In addition it leads to environmental awareness and is a first step towards ensuring the continuance of healthy and sustainable lives on the planet.
Being prepared to do the humble act of picking up a piece of rubbish every day and planting one tree a year are the necessary first steps towards creating healthy and sustainable lives and a heathy and sustainable Earth.
We encourage you to join the micro movement. One simple environmentally friendly act when replicated by many people over time leads to lasting positive change. We encourage you to become custodians of your environment.
From us at The Spruce Initiative we wish you a happy holiday season and a Spruced up environment this New Year.
Clean and Green is our motto. Don’t just clean, let’s Soruce.
Cheers, Felicity
Clean and green is our motto. Remember: one piece a day sends the rubbish away! Don’t just clean let’s Spruce.
