World Clean Up Day and the Spruce Initiative

Sep 4, 2025

This month at the Spruce Initiative we look at World Clean Up Dat which is September 20 th each year and the Spruce Inutiative. It is a UN sanctioned global action day which mobilises many people around the world.

In Australia and the Southern Hemisphere it is a Spring clean up day while in the Northern Hemisphere it is a clean up to prepare for the end of year holiday season. In both hemispheres it is an annual cleaning bee day.

As we have stated previously cleaning bees go hand in hand with practising with the Spruce Initiative. Many people joining together for an annual cleaning bee can make a big difference to the health and cleanliness of the environment.

According to the UN online sources the theme for this year’s Clean Up the World Day is Fashion and Textile Waste. The key words being Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

At this time of year we are encouraged to take stock of our wardrobes and to invest in sustainable clothing. As we prepare for change of season we need to reduce the amount of clothing we own and invest in sustainable clothing solutions.

Did you know for instance that some polyester fabrics can be recycled? And unwanted clothing can be taken to op shops to be reused? These are better solutions than sending clothes to landfill.

Good quality clothes that are made from natural fibres are amongst the most sustainable for the environment. We need to be conscious of what we wear.

Mostly clothing doesn’t end up on the street however it does take up a lot of landfill and we need to be mindful of waste management.

Synthetic clothing is not as easily recycled, doesn’t last as well and contributes to much landfill. It is mostly not as comfortable to wear as natural fibres.

Textiles used in furniture and floor coverings are also more sustainable when made of natural fibres. We need to take care of these fabrics reducing our use of artificial fabrics and coverings for our furniture and rugs.

Natural fibres often cost more however they are more enjoyable and sustainable for the environment. We encourage you to choose wisely and have old furniture recovered and recycled.

Reducing the amount of furniture, rugs, table linen, towels and bedding we go through, reusing it and recycling it leads to sustainable housing solutions.

I have an elderly friend who wears clothing passed down to her from her mother. I recently complimented her on the sweater she was wearing and she said it was knitted by her mother. Good quality clothes last more than one lifetime and don’t out of date.

While it is fun to be fashionable, classic clothes are rarely dated. It is fashionable to be retro. We encourage you to make choices that last.

We encourage you to be mindful of what you wear and to reduce landfill wherever possible.

This World Clean Up Day we suggest you take stock of your wardrobe, your table linen, bedding, bath towels, furniture and floor coverings and all the textiles you use and plan to choose sustainable solutions.

Remember even a few sustainable choices when multiplied by many people add up to lasting and sustainable positive changes to the environment. This World Clean Up Day take a chance to Spruce up your environment.

One piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce.

Cheers,
