Vitruvian Values and The Spruce Initiative

Now is the time to start thinking about the environment and the difference you can make to the world. Just by being prepared to pick up one piece of rubbish when you are out in your daily walk and disposing of it appropriately, you can make a positive change to your environment.

When you go into shops and see some merchandise on the floor do you pick it up and put it back on the shelf or hanger? Be a good citizen. Shops are part of the community environment too.

When you’re at work does the refrigerator or coffee bar need a wipe? We all enjoy clean and healthy environments. Even if you can’t go for a daily walk you can still participate in Sprucing up you environment. Why not buy some flowers or put candy in a bowl.

I remember when I was working in a grey little cubicle with out a window I purchased a kaleidoscope from the Art Museum. I kept it in my cubicle. It is important to acknowledge the three Vitruvian Values of Firmness, Commodity and Delight.

By these we mean your environment whether indoors or out is holding steady, it fits the needs of the community, is comfortable. and It leads to happiness and joy.

Rubbish mars the environment. It looks out of place.

A clean environment wipes the slate and prepares us for delight. Even people dropping rubbish prefer a clean environment. They are off loading on the community. The idea is we all win when the environment is clean. If you are prepared to pick up one piece of rubbish a day you become part of the solution. This behaviour is sustainable as the cleaner the environment gets, the more incentive there is to go the extra mile and keep it clean all the time.

Now we come to the next phase. We start with gifting the Earth our home with the present of a new tree or even a shrub. We do this at the end of the calendar year, at the conclusion of the holiday season and the start of a new annual cycle. Our chosen date for this is the traditional day for taking down holiday decorations, January 5 th.

We have made this a new tradition. It is derived from our Christian heritage and we would like to share this with other faiths and cultures. Most of us follow the Gregorian Calendar. January 5 th marks the end of the holiday season. We put away the holiday decorations, Spruce up our homes and businesses and make plans for the coming year. We engage in Sorucing up our community and environmental spaces.

The end of year is a time of exchanging gifts with each other. At The Spruce Initiative we remember the planet which sustains us in our end of year gift giving. Plants, trees in particular, support our lives. The present of a tree to our planet sustains us.

In addition, keeping our waterways clean eases the load on marine plants, algae and bacteria which contribute to clean air. We need to be aware of the load cities, in particular, place on the environment. Climate change is a real issue which needs to be addressed.

At The Spruce Initiative we have been giving a monthly pep talk and are planning a weekly blog to address positive change to our environment. Please feel free to participate. Take a stand with us. It’s free to join.

Let’s make our planet a Firm, Commodious and Delightful place.

Clean and Geen is our motto. One piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce!

Cheers,
Felicity
