Comments on the Theme for World Oceans Day “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us”
This month at the Spruce Initiative we explore and comment on the theme for World Ocean’s Day 2025. “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.” We look at the part practising with the Spruce Initiative can play in sustaining the health of our oceans.
June 8 th each year is World Oceans Day. It is a chance to reflect on and draw awareness to our oceans. Our oceans sustain us in many ways. They modify the climate, provide food and energy, support biodiversity, transport and recreation.
It is critically important that we protect our oceans so that they continue to sustain us. The first step is to combat pollution of our oceans by rubbish and waste. Without clean oceans the sustainability of our oceans are threatened.
We have become aware of the on going threat of plastic pollution which threatens the health of our marine life and makes its way into the food chain in the form of micro plastic pollution. Much of our seafood is already contaminated with micro plastics.
We need to reduce the use of plastics as they leech out of the soil in ground water and pollute our waterways. Rubbish on the street if not picked up eventually works its way into our oceans. It isn’t only the micro plastics in our oceans which are a problem. Plastic waste such as plastic bags, bottles and other plastic items frequently find their way into our oceans and form an active threat to marine life. Fish and other marine creatures may mistake plastics for food and choke on them or become entangled in them.
We encourage you to take daily action. When you are out on your daily walk pick up plastic trash and dispose of it appropriately. Each piece of plastic that you pick up and dispose of appropriately helps save marine life.
We also encourage you to pick up foil chip bags and candy wrappers. These too maybe mistaken for food by marine life and clog our waterways.
Are you aware that 50% of the world’s oxygen is produced by plants, algae and bacteria in the ocean? We desperately need to reduce the pollution of the oceans to sustain these oxygen producing life forms.
Overfishing upsets the balance of life in our oceans. We encourage the adoption of sustainable fishing practises. Sustainable fishing practises ensure there is food for future generations.
Planting trees, as we know, helps combat global warming and helps maintain our planetary ecosystems. We encourage you to plant a tree every year to help maintain the climate modification of our oceans and to aid in maintaining a sustainable environment.
We encourage you to take daily steps towards a sustainable planetary ecosystem. Help keep our oceans clean and healthy. Help sustain our oceans so they in turn can sustain our lives on the planet. Happy World Oceans Day 2025.
Clean and Green is our motto. Go one step further and make it Blue. Remember: one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean, let’s Spruce.
Cheers, Felicity
