In Support of Earth Day 2025

Apr 13, 2025

This month at the Spruce Initiative we lend our support to the Earth Day movement. Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 each year. The theme for this year’s Earth Day 2025 according to the official Earthday.org website is “Our Power, Our Planet”.

On the Earthday.org website they are asking for a tripling of renewable energy by 2030. Earthday.org claim that the minimum energy consumption per capita to sustain a lifestyle above the poverty level is 1000 kilowatt hours per annum. They ask for the increase in the total global energy consumption to be made up by renewable energy. They advocate replacement of non renewable energy with renewables.

We support Earthday.org’s aim of making every day Earth Day. In addition we would like to see a reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions to preindustrial revolution levels. It is not only greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming but city heat, pollution and non sustainable farming practises that contribute to climate change.

Every year year I personally purchase offsets for my carbon emissions. However a better plan is to reduce carbon emissions, pollution and energy usage. We can do this by making energy usage more efficient, switching to renewables, reducing our use of plastics and walking.

At the Spruce Initiative we have a clean and green strategy. We support making it Earth Day every day. We realise that while one person can’t by themselves clean and green the entire planet they can commit to picking up one piece of rubbish when they are out on their daily walk and giving the gift of life to our planet by planting a tree in honour of International Spruce Day. Our strategy makes for a healthy life and a healthy planet.

The Spruce Initiative is more than just a clean and green strategy. It is a way of life that leads to environmental awareness. Just as wouldn’t cook your dinner in a dirty pot, the first step towards a sustainable healthy planet is to be prepared to join in keeping it clean every day.

If every year everyone on the planet planted a tree (this may be in the form of a tree, a seedling or even a seed) that’s 8 billion trees a year! Some organisations such as Greenfleet not only plant wildlife habitat but ensure that the habitat will be protected for a hundred years!

In honour of Earth Day why not plant two trees? One for you and one for your neighbour.

8 billion trees a year is a lot of wildlife habitat and healthy human living environments. We encourage you to make the annual planting of a tree a family tradition. We chose January 5 th as International Spruce Day as it marks the traditional end of the holiday season in our culture. On International Spruce Day we pack away our holiday decorations and Spruce up our environment in time for the beginning of the New Year.

Do consider joining our plan to make it Earth Day every day.

Clean and green is our motto. Remember one piece a day sends the rubbish away. Don’t just clean let’s Spruce!

Cheers,
Felicity
